The Tongue Set Free (2002)

The Indian project of the Women’s World is housed in Asmita, a Hyderabad-based resource centre for women. The first phase of the project involved ten language-specific workshops in different parts of the country that brought together groups of women writers representing as wide a range as possible in terms of age, experience, perspective or ideology, geographical location, socio-economic and cultural or ethnic background, genre of writing and other possible variables. The issues covered in the ten workshops conducted between 1999 and 2001 were discussed at a national colloquium in 2001. Presented in The Tongue Set Free are the texts of the speeches at the event. Each writer-speaker approaches the core issue from a different angle thus throwing fresh light on the concept of gender-based censorship as experienced by Indian women creative writers.
