Speaking in Tongues: An Analytical Review of Women’s Writing and Censorship in India (2002)

Women in India, as we know, have been writing for more than 2000 years, and they have written about practically everything; yet they have remained invisible, much like women writers in other parts of the world. The multiplicity of languages makes for an unusual situation in which most educated Indians are at least are at least bi- if not trilingual, and are able to read, if not write in more than one language. Literary history, no matter in which language it is written in India, has ignored women. In India, like elsewhere, the women’s movement has been critical in the recovery of women’s writing, in breaking the silence that enveloped their experiences. Speaking in Tongues: Gender, Censorship & Voice in India, is the final fruit of the Gender and Censorship Project. The various sections titled – The Right to Write, Forms of Censorship, Gendering the Genre, The Language of Censorship and Forms of Exclusion, cover some of the most crucial aspects of this project. The publication also takes a look at the very important concern of identifying the readership in need of women’s writing and also the emphasis on giving a voice to women writers in all languages.
